Mánes

Mánes is the building that is sometimes referred to as the Mánes Fine Artists Association. The building is located at the southern tip of the Slavic (Slovanský) Island.

Originally, there used to be the Šítkovský mill, which was said to be there since the 12th century. In 1495, a water-station and Šítkovská water tower were built, the latter became part of the new building. It was built in the years 1928 - 1930 for the Mánes association in the functionalist style by architect Otokar Novotny. The building had a restaurant, a clubhouse and an exhibition hall.

The building housed the Mánes Association of Fine Artists, which was founded in 1887. Its purpose was to discuss and lecture on the Czech art as well as the European, publish magazines, art books and organize exhibitions. The association was named after the painter Josef Mánes. Since February 1948, the Association Mánes was persecuted and eventually in 1956 forcibly dissolved.
